Sukhothai
The Sukhothai kingdom 1238–1438 ruled most of present-day Thailand. It was the first big competitor with China for regional ceramics exports.
This heavily potted stoneware celadon “grenade” bottle has two ears for fastening a stopper. As an export item, the ceramic was the packaging for whatever liquid was being exported, likely a culinary sauce, perfume, oil or medication. This black and brown one still smells of its 600-year old perfume. (Soapy, and strong, like it was an extract and more of an ingredient than a final perfume.)
