Brushwork
Home / / Brushwork

One of the true secrets of Chinese ceramics is that the language is written with a brush rather than pen. Brushstrokes show us varying pressures, widths, ink levels, and speed. Combined, these clues add an extra layer of meaning, revealing the energy and spirit behind them.

This jar from the mid-Ming shows the fluid strokes of a practiced hand, drawing an abstract (cloud?) dog alternating with Wheels of Fire.
